Recovering Legalists Ministries was founded to assist those people who have been involved in churches or cults where His grace was not fully explored and appreciated and those who have not experienced unconditional love in their families of origin. We wish to point people to Jesus.

Recommended Resources

At RLM, we believe that each of us has a unique and personal walk with our Lord. While no two journeys out of legalism are exactly alike, some have been helped greatly by various resources, which exalt our relationship with Jesus and extol His unconditional love for us.

We recommend the following books and ministries:

  • The Grace and Truth Paradox, Responding with Christlike Balance, Randy Alcorn.

Truth without grace breeds self-righteousness and crushing legalism. Grace without truth breeds deception and moral compromise. Is it possible to embrace both in balance?

    Jesus did.

Randy Alcorn offers a simple yet profound two-point checklist of Christlikeness. “In the end, “says Alcorn, “we don’t need grace or truth. We need grace and truth. And for people to see Jesus in us, they must see both
  •
  • Relational Christianity by Steve Meeks. This book has helped many to move from "Institutional Christianity" to a more personal relationship with our Friend, Savior, and Elder Brother, Jesus.  Visit his website at www.calvaryhouston.com.
  •
  • Watchman Fellowship  www.Watchman.org/GA
Watchman Fellowship is an independent Christian research and apologetics ministry focusing on new religious movements, cults, the occult and the New Age.
The Founder and Chairman is David Henke, 706-576-4321
    P.O. Box 7681 Columbus, GA 31908 Email: dhenke@watchman.org

  • Plain Truth Ministries These Christians have deep feelings for those in spiritual bondage some having been there in the distant past.  This site offers help even for those so hurt as to avoid Christian fellowship altogether.  "Church Without Walls" may be an alternative for some.  www.ptm.org
  •
  • The Christian Research Institute (CRI) Hank Hanegraaff has become one of the foremost Christian apologists of our day and is the "Bible Answer Man" on radio.  CRI offers resources to help those confused about authentic Christian doctrine and practice.  He offers help and material on specific cults and churches with heresy.  www.equip.org.
  •
  • Hope For the Heart  June Hunt offers resources of value at www.hopefortheheart.org.  Examples of interest would be "Cults", "Depression", "Fear", "Grief Recovery", "Islam", "Jehovah's Witnesses", "Perfectionism", "Salvation", "Spiritual Abuse and Legalism".  Give this ministry a call at 1-800-488-4673.
  •
  • Bible in 90 Days   What could be more refreshing for someone coming out of heresy than a plan to read through the Bible in 3 months.  In 1999 Ted Cooper Jr. was agnostic.  Curious about the Bible Ted realized if he read just 12 pages a day he could complete his reading in 90 days.  By May, Ted was a commited Christian. www.biblein90days.com
  •
  • Ligonier Ministries  Too exhausted to think about doctrine?  Your view of Christian doctrine affects everything you think.  Why not learn from a Christ-centered theologian who has helped thousands?  In R.C. Sproul's own words, "Our commitment over the decades has never changed: to faithfully present the unvarnished truth of Scripture to help people grow in their knowledge of God and His holiness".  www.ligonier.org
  •
  • Emerson Eggerichs, a pastor with a PhD. His current focus is on restoring marriages using the Ephesians 5:33 verse - "Husbands love your wives. Wives respect your husbands."  www.loveandrespect.com

In his book, Love and Respect,  Eggerichs builds a compelling case that men and women are designed differently (Big shocker for some!). His point is that women know, understand, and need love. Men know, understand, and need respect. Failing to understand this, puts us on the Crazy Cycle. "Without love - she responds - without respect - he responds - Without love - (picture this around a circle, creating an InfiniteLoop). For a few decades, we have been inundated with books on Love. While crucial to relationships, it has missed a vital need felt in the core of men. The lives, friendships, work, and family relationships of men are seen through the lens of RESPECT (in an interesting twist, the song R-E-S-P-E-C-T was originally written and sung by a man). Eggerichs shows that, just as we are expected by God to love each other unconditionally, He also expects us to treat each other respectfully - unconditionally. The concept is reviving ruined marriages and saving families. I recommend this for anyone coming out of legalism especially if you are married, divorced, divorced and remarried or about to be married.

The Shack, by Wm. Paul Young  Perhaps you have heard about this best seller by now.  Having just read it I can say that it is now a part of my "recovery" and I recommend it to you. Check out www.theshackbook.com

The Shack is a one of a kind invitation to journey to the very heart of God. Through my tears and cheers,  I have been indeed transformed by the tender mercy with which William Paul Young opened the veil that too often separated me from God and from myself. With every page, the complicated do’s and don’t that distort a relationship into a religion were washed away as I understood Father, Son, and Holy Ghost for the first time in my life.    Patrick M. Roddy, Emmy Award Winning Producer of ABC News

The Firescalds Road to the Sky, a Novel of a Young Boy’s Faith Journey to God. by Cleveland Jones

The Firescalds Road to the Sky depicts a boy’s faith journey from religious sect to a relationship with God.

The Firescalds Road to the Sky is a fact-based novel that follows a young boy, RC, and his family living in the Appalachian Mountains in the  late 1940s to their eventual return to Newport News in the 1950s. Jones’ novel depicts RC’s discovery of the vital importance of a personal relationship with God, and the value of the freedom to live an adventurous life—tempered by obedience to God.

“This book demonstrates a unique understanding of the word of God that is only acquired by many thorough readings of the Bible. Cleveland brilliantly shares these understandings with his readers.”—C. Campbell, retired Systems Engineer, Alexandria, Va.
